Remnants Inspired by Memory 17
1982 - Present
Description
Amid the shattered alleys of memory, and behind the dust of streets that no longer resemble themselves, these words are born to describe the fragmentation of soul and body in Gaza. “Leaving” was never merely a step beyond the threshold of a home; it was a tearing of the heart’s membrane. In Gaza, the displaced do not pack their belongings; they pack the remnantsof a life into a narrow backpack, placing inside it a key to a house they may never return to, a family photograph with faded edges, and the scent of thyme that refuses to leave their clothes. This is not a movement from one geography to another, but a continuous fall into the abyss of estrangement within one’s own homeland. It is the recurring scene of thousands of feet walking toward the “unknown,” carrying on their shoulders the exhaustion of years, blanketsthat fail to shield the soul from cold, and children who grew up too soon, asking with their pale faces, “When will we return?” a question that crashes into the silence of rubble. In every corner we have lost, there is a story suspended.okes. This formed a panoramic image that mirrors its narrative and the aspirations of its exhausted people.
